Episode 37: Inflection with Natalia Cowley
A key sentiment we often hear from guests on this podcast is that change is necessary, and it’s uncomfortable. But what if organisational change isn’t enough?
Confused? Maybe, but stay with us on this one.
Many organisations reach a point where better leadership, better strategy, and better execution aren't enough to move the organisation in the direction it needs. In fact, at this point of disruption, whether it’s financial, competitive, technological, reputational, or otherwise, it’s more than a question of change management; it actually questions if the organisation is capable of getting to where it needs to be. This is the point of inflection, where you must move beyond improving a system to changing the actual system itself.
This provocation is one that our latest guest, Natalia Cowley, explores deeply in her new book, Inflector, where she looks back on her extensive experience working with organisations who have faced pivotal inflection points.

About this episode:
This episode offers a fresh perspective that challenges the difficult question of “where to now,” when organisational changes made haven't been enough to move an organisation to where it needs to be. Before you jump to more restructures, leadership changes, or system optimisations, listen to this episode to learn more about inflection points, how to recognise them, the different delivery approach needed to tackle them, and how the outcome goes beyond improvements to making an organisation capable of doing something that it wasn’t able to before.
Together, we talk about how inflectors are different to leaders, how to recognise if, in your own organisation you have reached an inflection point, and proven ways that Natalia has used to help to bring people along on the journey, even beyond the time when an inflector steps out of the organisation.
It’s a compelling conversation, especially for those leaders who are facing disruptions in their organisations, where they have capable people, have made leadership changes, and have tried optimising where they can but continue to see their organisation’s trajectory move in the opposite direction to where it needs to go.
As with many of our previous episode conversations on crisis management, this conversation frames these pivotal moments as an opportunity to build agility, an excellent precursor to learning how to inflect.
As the winner of the prestigious Outstanding Contribution to the Public Sector Award from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, Natalia offers a fresh perspective on driving lasting, fundamental organisational transformation, with useful analogies and specific examples from her career where she has achieved significant results.
Inflector by Natalia Cowley:
Leadership is no longer enough.
Inflection is the new apex
of executive ambition.
Every organization eventually reaches a point when doing more of the same no longer works.
Better leadership isn’t enough.
Better execution isn’t enough.
Better strategy isn’t enough.
What is required is a redesign of how the institution itself creates value, capability, and impact.
Inflection is the point at which a leader stops optimizing for survival and starts optimizing for a higher level of institutional performance—by recalibrating organizations to deliver more at scale, with durability, and without dilution.
Inflectors do not replace leaders. They operate at a higher level. Redesigning what organizations can produce, not how people are persuaded.
